Pune: The Wadgaon Sheri Ward Office has taken a significant step towards environmental sustainability by eliminating plastic water bottles from its premises. Going forward, senior officials, public representatives, and citizens attending meetings will be served water in copper vessels (Tambya and Phulpatra) instead of plastic bottles.
This decision aligns with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which promotes plastic-free environments. The initiative was introduced by Assistant Regional Commissioner Sanjay Pol, who believes that government offices must lead by example before encouraging the public to adopt similar measures.
Under this initiative, a large collection of copper vessels and cups has been procured. The Wadgaon Sheri Ward Office regularly hosts meetings attended by: senior government officials, public representatives, local social workers, citizens attending Mohalla Committee meetings. From now on, water will only be served in copper vessels at all such gatherings.
Assistant Regional Commissioner Sanjay Pol emphasized the importance of leading by example, stating: "Before asking citizens to stop using plastic, we must first enforce the rule within our own office. This initiative will set the right precedent—first implement, then advise."
The move has been welcomed by Mohalla Committee members and local citizens, with many calling for its adoption across other government offices. Arvind Paradeshi, a Mohalla Committee member, stated: "This is a commendable step towards a plastic-free environment. Other offices should follow suit. This initiative should not be limited to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan but should be adopted permanently."
