Wagholi: Pedestrian killed by ST bus on Pune Nagar Highway

Lack of barriers on divider allows pedestrians to cross the highway indiscriminately, leading to dangerous collisions with speeding vehicles.

Pune: A tragic accident occurred at around 9:15 AM in Wagholi on the Pune Nagar Highway in front of the SBI bank, where a 40-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed instantly by an ST bus traveling from Rajgurunagar to Paithan. The identity of the deceased has yet to be established.

The accident happened while the pedestrian was attempting to cross the highway. He was hit by the bus heading towards Nagar and was run over by its rear wheels, resulting in immediate death. The scene of the accident was marked by a large pool of blood.

Police from the Loni Kand station and traffic department officials promptly arrived at the location. The deceased was taken to Sassoon Hospital, and the bus was cleared from the road, allowing traffic to resume. The police covered the bloodstained area with soil and later cleaned it with water.

Senior Police Inspector Savlaram Salgaonkar also attended the accident site. The bus driver initially fled but subsequently reported to the police station. Traffic officers, including Jitendra Pawar and Swapnil Galfade, managed to restore order to the traffic.

Barriers to be installed on highway divider within eight days

In response to a series of recent accidents, including pedestrian fatalities on the Pune Nagar Highway in Wagholi, officials have decided to take preventive measures.

The lack of barriers on the divider has allowed pedestrians to cross the highway indiscriminately, leading to dangerous collisions with speeding vehicles.

Following the accident, Senior Police Inspector Salgaonkar coordinated with public works department officials to ensure the installation of barriers on the divider within the next eight days.
