Pune: An all-women panel at the PIC Climate Emergency Conference, held at the Pune International Centre Campus on International Women’s Day, brought attention to the crucial role of women in driving climate solutions. The discussion focused on the intersection of climate change with social, economic, and governance challenges, highlighting the need for inclusive and resilient strategies.

The panel was chaired by Prof. Amitav Mallik, Founder Member and Trustee of PIC, and Convenor of the Conference. Panellist Dr. Girija Godbole, GHOD Water Fund Lead, stressed that climate change is not just an environmental issue but a social one, deepening inequalities across economic, gender, and urban-rural lines. She urged for greater representation of marginalized communities in policymaking to ensure just and effective climate solutions.

Discussing the mental health impact of climate change, Aditi Kale, Director at CCP Environmental Foundation, spoke about the increasing issue of eco-anxiety. She emphasized the need for resilience and urged individuals to adopt conscious consumer habits. She also highlighted the importance of integrating climate awareness into professional fields, stating that resilience is essential for survival.

Anagha Paranjpe, Founder of VK:e, emphasized the need for sustainable urban governance. She noted that while cities occupy only 3% of India's land area, they generate 65% of the country’s GDP. She called for stronger investments in urban planning to ensure environmentally responsible development.

Highlighting the role of climate literacy in shaping policy, Dr. Priyadarshini Karve, CEO of Clean Energy Access Network, raised a thought-provoking question: Can climate awareness reach a level where public demand compels policymakers to reduce their dependence on petroleum? Her remarks underscored the importance of knowledge-driven activism in driving systemic change.

As Women’s Day celebrates progress and empowerment, the tech industry remains a crucial space for change. The growing presence of women in technology is not just a trend but a movement toward inclusivity and leadership.

According to TeamLease Digital, women’s participation in India’s tech workforce is projected to reach 14.9% by 2026, up from 10.8% in 2022, growing at an annual rate of 5.5%. However, experts emphasize that true progress is not just about representation—it’s about ensuring that women thrive, lead, and innovate in the field.
