On the same ground where the United States declared its independence 250 years ago, America buried a message to the future on Friday, a one-tonne stainless steel time capsule outside Independence Hall in Philadelphia, containing nearly 200 items from across the country. The capsule will remain sealed until July 4, 2276.
The project was mandated by a 2016 law creating the nonpartisan America250 commission, which required a time capsule to be buried in Philadelphia during the nation's 250th anniversary celebrations and opened 250 years later.
Built to endure for generations, the 900-pound cylinder has been interred 10 feet below ground and enclosed within a protective casing to guard it against temperature fluctuations and weather-related deterioration.
The capsule contains contributions from all three branches of government, all 50 states, the five US territories and Washington DC. Among the items placed inside are :
An iPhone 17 Pro Max, representing technology in 2026
A molecular data storage device from the Library of Congress
Synthetic DNA containing digital copies of historic documents
A pocket Constitution signed by US Supreme Court justices
A crystal from the 2026 Times Square New Year's Eve ball drop
The states also contributed unique artefacts. Arizona sent a stainless steel coin etched with the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution, Maine contributed a bone from the endangered North Atlantic right whale, and California included an AI-generated prediction of what the state could look like in 250 years.
Officials said the capsule is intended to preserve a snapshot of America in 2026 — its technology, culture and aspirations, for future generations to uncover when it is finally opened in 2276.
