Today, 10 May 2026, is Mother’s Day, a global celebration honouring mothers and maternal figures for their contributions to families and society. While the UK celebrates Mothering Sunday in March, most countries, including the US, India, Australia and Canada, observe Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May each year.
Mother’s Day began in the early 20th century in the United States, thanks to the efforts of Anna Jarvis. After her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died in 1905, Anna campaigned for a special day to honour mothers and their sacrifices. Ann had earlier organised “Mothers’ Work Clubs” during the American Civil War to help wounded soldiers.
The first official Mother’s Day celebration was held in 1908 at a church in Grafton. Anna’s campaign succeeded when Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday of May as a national holiday in 1914. The tradition soon spread across the world, with many countries adopting their own customs.
Later in life, Anna Jarvis criticised the growing commercialisation of Mother’s Day, saying it should remain a sincere and personal expression of gratitude rather than a business-driven celebration.
Mom, I didn’t realize growing up how much you sacrificed quietly for us. I see it now, and I’ll never stop being grateful.
You’ve loved me through every phase, every mistake, and every heartbreak. That kind of love changes a person forever.
Thank you for always answering my calls, calming my fears, and reminding me that I can survive hard days.
A mother’s love is strange magic—it stays with you even when you’re far away.
You made our house feel safe, even during difficult times. That is a gift I’ll cherish forever.
Every strong part of me has your fingerprints on it.
I hope today you feel loved as deeply as you have loved everyone around you.
Mom, your patience, warmth, and resilience are things I admire more as I grow older.
You gave so much of yourself without asking for anything back. Today is for you.
Some lessons are taught in words. The most important ones I learned just by watching you live.
Thank you for being the person I could always return to, no matter how lost I felt.
Your love never felt loud or dramatic—it felt steady, comforting, and real.
The older I get, the more extraordinary your ordinary efforts seem.
Mothers carry entire worlds inside them and still somehow make room for everyone else.
If love had a face, mine would look a lot like yours.

Happy Mother’s Day to the woman who made every hard day feel easier with just one hug.
Thank you for loving me even in the versions of me I struggled to love myself.
No matter how old I grow, your voice still feels like home. Happy Mother’s Day.
Wishing you a day filled with peace, laughter, flowers, and absolutely no stress.
Mom, your strength built this family quietly, gently, and completely.
Happy Mother’s Day to my first friend, safest place, and biggest blessing.
I hope life gives you back even half the love you’ve poured into everyone else.
Thank you for making ordinary days feel warm and unforgettable.
You’ve always carried everyone’s worries with a smile. Today, let us celebrate you.
Mom, you deserve soft mornings, happy tears, and endless appreciation today.
Your love has shaped every beautiful part of who I am.
Happy Mother’s Day to the heart of this family and the soul of our home.
Some people wear capes. Mine wore tired eyes and still kept going.
You taught me kindness without ever preaching it.
I may not say it enough, but everything good in me began with you.
A mother’s love stays with you forever.
Home will always sound like my mother’s voice.
Happy Mother’s Day to the woman who gave me everything without asking for anything back.
Mothers make the world softer.
Her prayers protected me more than I knew.
Every strong child has a stronger mother behind them.
Thank you for loving me through every version of myself.
Mom: my first comfort place.
Some angels don’t have wings. They answer to “Mom.”
Forever grateful for her sacrifices and silent strength.
Nothing compares to a mother’s warmth.
Her love still carries me through hard days.
Happy Mother’s Day to the heart of our family.
She gave me roots and wings at the same time.
A mother’s love is life’s purest blessing.
