In the latest development of West Asia churn, Iran has declined to take part in a second round of peace negotiations with the United States, heightening tensions as naval confrontations resume. The state-run IRNA news agency reported that there are “no plans” for additional talks at this time, accusing Washington of making unreasonable demands, changing its stance, and engaging in “constant contradictions.” The report also cited what it described as a continuing naval blockade and recent incidents at sea as major barriers to diplomatic progress.
According to IRNA, America’s “excessive demands, unreasonable and unrealistic expectations, frequent shifts in positions, continuous contradictions, and the so-called naval blockade which violates ceasefire understanding, along with threatening rhetoric, have so far hindered progress in the negotiations.”
“Under these conditions, the outlook for constructive talks remains bleak,” it added. Tehran also accused Washington of engaging in a “blame game” and spreading false claims about Iran’s participation in a second round of talks to exert pressure on the country.
"The reports circulating about a second round of negotiations in Islamabad are false," Iran's state-sponsored broadcaster, Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), said.
Tehran said the talks “cannot be considered positive” and that there is “no clear prospect of fruitful negotiations” under current conditions. Iranian envoy Reza Amiri Moghadam accused Washington of undermining diplomacy with coercive actions, saying “as long as the naval blockade remains, faultlines remain.”
The diplomatic breakdown comes amid rising maritime tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route. Iranian state media said the US naval blockade of its ports remains a major sticking point, calling it collective punishment. Tensions further escalated after reports of a US warship intercepting and damaging an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel, with Washington citing sanctions enforcement and Tehran calling it “armed piracy” and warning of retaliation.
