President Donald Trump indicated in a recent interview with a British newspaper that he is considering withdrawing the US from NATO, following repeated criticism of the alliance’s lack of support for the Iran war.
When asked by The Telegraph whether he would reconsider US membership in NATO after the conflict, Trump replied: “Oh yes, I would say (it’s) beyond reconsideration… I was never swayed by NATO. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and (Russian President Vladimir) Putin knows that too, by the way.”
The Strait of Hormuz remains closed after Iran’s response to US and Israeli attacks, with NATO hesitant to intervene. President Donald Trump criticized the alliance for “not being there” for the US. On Truth Social, he wrote: “You’ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the U.S.A. won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us.” He added in The Telegraph: “Beyond not being there, it was actually hard to believe… I just think it should be automatic. We’ve been there automatically, including Ukraine… They weren’t there for us.”
Trump also mocked UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, saying: “You don’t even have a navy. You’re too old and had aircraft carriers that didn’t work… All Starmer wants is costly windmills that are driving your energy prices through the roof.”
Starmer responded that NATO remains “the single most effective military alliance the world has ever seen” and stressed that Britain will not “get dragged into” the war with Iran.
