Zakir Naik’s ‘Peace TV’ fined for ‘hate speech, highly offensive’ content

Controversial preacher Zakir Naik’s Peace TV and Peace TV Urdu have been fined 3,00,000 Pound for spreading hate speech and rousing murder through its broadcast in the United Kingdom. The fine has been levied by UK’s media watchdog Ofcom which is the regulator for the communications facilities.

The UK communications services regulator penalised the holding company of Peace TV, Lord Communications, a total of £1 lakh. At the same time, Club TV which possesses Peace TV Urdu was hit with a penalty of £2 lakh.

A statement by the UK media watchdog stated, “Ofcom has today fined the former licence holders of Peace TV Urdu £200,000 and Peace TV £100,000 for breaking our broadcasting rules.”

It added, “Our investigations found that programmes broadcast on Peace TV Urdu and Peace TV contained hate speech and highly offensive content, which in one instance was likely to incite crime.”

The 54-year-old who is wanted in both India and Bangladesh on terror, as well as finance charges, has sought refuge in Malaysia.

INDIA DEMANDS MALAYSIA TO HANDOVER NAIK
Recently India submitted a formal request to the Malaysian administration to expel fugitive Zakir Naik. The Indian government is taking it up with Malaysia at the highest level, ANI quoted. The controversial preacher is on the Wanted List for India in money laundering and provocative extremism through hate speeches. He left the country and moved to Malaysia in 2016.

  • 1990: Zakir Naik came in the spotlight over his activities of Dawah- preaching for Islam through Islamic Research Foundation (IRF).
  • 2006: The controversial preacher voiced support for Osama bin Laden and his terrorist group Al-Qaeda.
  • 2013: Malaysia awarded him Tokoh Maal Hijrah in recognition for his contribution to the Islamic community.
  • 2016: India investigated Zakir after suspects who held attack in a cafe in Bangladesh stated that Zakir’s speeches were their source of motivation.
  • 2019: Police in Malaysia received 115 reports over his challenging comments and opened an investigation against him.
