Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has taken a firm stand against illegal gambling activities, leading to the arrest of a notorious gambling den operator, Bunty Mishra (36).
Mishra had been operating his den under the alleged protection of local police officers despite numerous complaints from residents and repeated warnings.
The gambling den, located on the border between Vishrantwadi and Yerawada police jurisdictions, caused confusion over enforcement responsibility. This delay allowed the operator to continue his activities with apparent impunity. Commissioner Kumar personally intervened, ordering both police stations to collaborate in taking action.
During the raid, nine individuals were caught gambling, and the den was completely dismantled. Commissioner Kumar also took the bold step of holding the officers allegedly protecting Mishra accountable by making them execute the raid. He emphasized that local police officers providing cover to illegal activities would be required to dismantle such operations themselves.
Police investigations revealed that Bunty Mishra, who resides in areas like Dighi and Pimpri-Chinchwad, operated multiple gambling dens, including one in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar slum. Residents of the slum had lodged several complaints with the Yerawada police station, prompting this action.
The police commissioner stated that the crackdown is part of a broader initiative to ensure public safety and peace. "Illegal businesses, including gambling and drug sales, will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Station in-charges have been instructed to act decisively against such activities. The action against Bunty Mishra is a clear example of our commitment," he said.
As part of the crackdown, the entire gambling setup was destroyed to prevent further activities. The incident has reportedly created unease among those involved in illegal activities and their alleged protectors in the police force.
