The Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2021 will be conducted in a single phase in 38 districts of the state. Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for the upcoming assembly elections, recently. The elections for the 234-member House will take place on April 6, while the results will be announced on May 2.

The 2021 Assembly Polls in the state will witness a major face-off between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-Indian National Congress (DMK- INC) alliance and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-Bharatiya Janata Party (AIADMK-BJP) combination.

Major Parties and Alliances contesting in Assembly Elections 2021

The ruling party, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). While AIADMK is yet to announce the number of seats that will be contested by the party, BJP’s seat share in the coming elections has been announced to be 20.

Along with BJP, AIADMK has joined hands with Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC), Puthiya Tamilagam, and Puthiya Needhi Katchi.

The current opposition party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is in alliance with the Indian National Congress for the upcoming election and have formed Secular Progressive Alliance. The party recently announced its seat share with Congress at 175-25.

Along with Congress, DMK led by MK Stalin has also been joined-in by the Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK), Kongunadu Makkal Desia Katchi (KMDK), Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK), Makkal Viduthalaid Katchi , as well as Aathi Tamizhar Peravai (ATP).

Among other parties, Amma Makkal Munnettra Kazagam (AMMK) is in alliance with All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), Gokula Makkal Katchi and Marudhu Senai Sangam; while Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) has joined hands with Indhiya Jananayaga Katchi (IJK), All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi (AISMK) and Social Democratic Party of India.

While major parties have formed alliances and coalitions, many others are ready to brace the storm on their own. Naam Tamilar Katchi, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, Anaithu Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi, Republican Party of India, Tamil Nadu Kongu Ilaingar Peravai, Mukkulathor Pulipadai, Tamil Maanila Muslim League, Tamil Nadu Peasants and Workers Party, Samuga Samathuva Padai, Bahujan Samaj Party and Welfare Party of India, are among the parties who are contesting assembly elections 2021 by themselves.

Tamil Nadu Election 2021 Opinion Poll

Times Now C-Voter opinion polls for Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2021 have recently been declared. The opinion polls predict that MK Stalin-led Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is expected to return to power in the state. While the DMK is expected to win 154-162, the ruling AIADMK may get around 60 seats in the 234 member assembly. Other parties including Kamal Hasan’s MNM, which is contesting the election for the first time, may also win a few seats.
