Pune, 30 June 2025: A district-level inquiry has revealed that 119 beneficiaries affected by old dam projects in Pune have received double compensation or more land than what was originally sanctioned. The highest number of such cases are linked to the Pavana dam project.

The investigation was initiated to review compensations given to those displaced by dam projects constructed before 1976, namely Nazare, Pavana, Panshet, and Varasgaon. As per the inquiry, several Pavana dam beneficiaries had relocated from their original homes, which made it difficult for the administration to serve them notices. Authorities are now trying to trace these individuals.

According to District Rehabilitation Officer Dr. Swapnil More, all identified individuals will be issued notices and given an opportunity to present their documents and explain their case. After a formal hearing, if excess benefit is confirmed, the compensation will be revoked with the approval of the Divisional Commissioner and the excess land will be reclaimed by the government.

The issue came to light following a High Court observation that even after 70 years, several dam-affected families are still receiving benefits, and in some cases, have received benefits twice. The court had directed the government to conduct a thorough investigation into such anomalies.

In Pune district, out of the six pre-1976 dam projects, the district rehabilitation office reviewed the compensation records of 3,712 affected families from Nazare, Pavana, Panshet, and Varasgaon. It was found that 119 people received extra land, ranging from one to three acres.

The breakdown is as follows:

  • Nazare Dam: 21 beneficiaries (8 with double compensation)

  • Pavana Dam: 53 beneficiaries

  • Panshet Dam: 11 beneficiaries

  • Varasgaon Dam: 34 beneficiaries

However, after a detailed investigation, officials concluded that Panshet and Varasgaon beneficiaries did not actually receive four extra acres, as initially suspected.

Notices have been served to all 119 individuals, and they have been asked to submit relevant documents during hearings. The administration has assured that a fair chance will be given before any action is taken.
