161 pc excess rainfall recorded in the State

PUNE: Maharashtra has received 161 per cent excess rainfall between August 1 and August 7. Pune, Nashik and Kolhapur districts received 423, 417 and 364 per cent excess rainfall, respectively. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), due to the deep depression in the Bay of Bengal, heavy rains will continue till August 10 in the State, after which rains will likely subside.

Owing to the very good rains in the State since the beginning of August, various parts of the State received exceptionally good rainfall. Konkan and Goa reported 216 per cent excess rainfall. 

Central Maharashtra surpassed the Konkan region with 318 per cent rainfall in the first seven days of August.

Drought-hit Marathwada also received 36 per cent excess rainfall from August 1 to August 7, followed by Vidarbha at 25 per cent excess rainfall.

FOR THE RAINY SEASON
Overall, the rainfall scenario for the State during the first week of August shows that some parts of Maharashtra received 31 per cent excess rainfall, while central Maharashtra received 65 per cent excess, whereas Konkan and Goa received 49 per cent excess rainfall. 

Even though the rainfall scenario is getting better, Marathwada still has 18 per cent rainfall deficiency followed by Vidarbha at 5 per cent. 

The country, as a whole, has only five per cent deficiency of rainfall at present. Central India has five per cent excess rainfall, Northwest India reported eight per cent rainfall deficiency followed by east and Northeast India at 13 per cent for the season. Southern peninsula reported 7 per cent rainfall deficiency.

PREDICTIONS FOR MAHARASHTRA
While speaking with Sakal Times, Anupam Kashyapi, Head of Weather at IMD Pune, said, the ghat areas near Pune, Nashik and Kolhapur may get heavy rains till August 9. 

“For August 10, heavy rainfall has been predicted at isolated places in Konkan and Goa and Madhya Maharashtra. On August 11 and August 12, there is isolated heavy rain warning for Konkan and Goa,” said Kashyapi.

Pune may get moderate rainfall on August 10. IMD predicted that light rain will continue till August 11 and thereafter till August 14.
