PUNE: As many as 350 participants trekked from the western side of the Sinhagad fort with the help of rope on February 15 to mark the 350th year of the battle of Sinhagad and the death anniversary of Tanaji Malusare, who was killed in the battle.

Tanaji, a commander of the Maratha Army under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, died while capturing the fort. A Bollywood movie about the warrior, ‘Tanhaji’ featuering Ajay Devgn was released on January 10 this year.

Malusare scaled a steep cliff from the western side of the fort to capture it. To relive that journey, the Ithihas Premi Mandal had organised this trek for the 350 participants from various age groups who attired like Maratha warriors

“After this trek many of us came to know that conquering fort has not been an easy task therefore, as many as 350 youths participated in the trek to pay tribute to Tanaji Malusare,” said Mohan Shete, member of the Ithihas Premi Mandal.

Lt Gen (retd) Rajendra Nimborkar felicitated the trekkers on their arrival. He said, “Such fort trek need to be organised so that youths can get an inspiration from the history of Maratha empire.”

Saurabh Jagtap, a participant, said, “Tanaji Malusare conquered the fort 350 years ago and it was won by Marathas. After climbing the fort, we did not just worship at the top, but it also gave us a real life experience on how forts can be conquered with the help of a rope.”
