45 lakh roses exported for Valentine’s Day

PIMPRI: Nearly 45 lakh roses from Maval taluka were exported for the Valentine’s Day celebrations till February 8, the last date for exporting these flowers. However, the deadline for the export of roses was extended till Monday, February 10, in view of shortage of these flowers.

Valentine’s Day celebrations on February 14 is the peak season for the rose producers in Maval taluka of Pune district.

The export of roses had began on January 26. The extended rainy season and absence of cold had led to early growth of flowers, 10 days prior to the normal date for exporting the roses.

This caused a shortage of roses during the export period, making it difficult for the exporters to meet the demand for flowers.

Sources said that of the total export of 45 lakh roses, 80 per cent flowers have been exported to Europe. Around 8 to 10 lakh roses were expected to be exported on February 9 and 10.

After the last consignment for export, the remaining roses will be sold in the local market. The shortage of roses in expected to fetch higher prices for the product in the local markets.

“Roses sold abroad have fetched a price of 12 per flower. On the contrary, the price of a rose in the local market is expected to rise to Rs 15 to Rs 16,” said Shivaji Bhegde, President of Pune District Flower Producers Association.
