AFMC increases student intake to 150 per year
PUNE: Sharing that the government has agreed on increasing the intake capacity of the city-based Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) from existing 130 to 150 per year, Lt Gen Bipin Puri, Director General, Armed Forces Medical Services said there will more emphasis on research in the medical field in the coming days.
Lt Gen Puri was speaking after inaugurating the 66th Annual Armed Forces Medical Research Conference on Tuesday. On the backdrop of this conference, 56th annual meeting of Armed Forces Medical Research Committee (AFMRC) meeting is being held on Tuesday and Wednesday. The award ceremony is being organised on February 9.
This forum provides direction and impetus to medical research in the armed forces. This year more than 173 research proposals will be discussed. AFMC, Pune has submitted 49 research projects. The conference is being organised for the discussions of present endeavors and what else can be planned for next year, “This year the special emphasis is given on medical research as we should give health the utmost importance," added Lt Gen Puri.
He shared that the workshop on research methodology is being organised on Friday and which will be of great help to young doctors and researchers.' Puri shared that the committee will give utmost importance in sensitising the research win on the health issues faced by combat troops, and troops stationed at deep sea or in the submarine.
This year's conference will focus on the medical treatment being given to troops in case of combat injuries which cannot be treated on the spot. Similarly, injuries and high altitude sickness faced by forces and the measures being undertaken to prevent these accidents.
Lt Gen Puri said that DNA profile project has been successfully accomplished wherein the DNA samples of soldiers in Indian Army and the same is stored in a data bank which can facilitate identification of bodies during any operation, attack or mishap. He said that till now around 7,000 profiles have been tagged.
