Author Kavita Mahajan passes away

PUNE: A well-known Marathi author Kavita Sakharam Mahajan (49) passed away at a private hospital on Thursday evening following a brief illness. She was survived by her daughter Disha. 

Mahajan was known for her bold style writing and had written several fictions including Bra, Bhinna, Multimedia, Kuhu and also had a compilation of poems Dhulicha Awaaj and many others to her credit. 

Mahajan who had completed Masters in Marathi Literature from Marathwada University had won many awards for her books. In 2008, she received a prestigious award by Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan for her exemplary literary service. She was also the recipient of Kaviyatri Bahinabai Award, while her translation of a compilation of short stories of Ismat Chughtai named ‘Rajai’ had received Sahitya Academy Award. Her collection of children’s short stories ‘Joyanache Rang’ received a State award.  

“Mahajan was suffering from cough and cold from the day she was admitted. She was diagnosed with pneumonia and both her lungs had failed. She was on full ventilator since Wednesday and died on Thursday evening,” said Vedavati Purandare, a physician from Chellaram Diabetes Hospital where Mahajan was admitted.
