Awareness rally organised in city

Pune: Obesity is not only the problem of a nation, it is rapidly spreading all over the world. While it used to be seen in elders earlier, today even children are becoming victims of obesity, said Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Medha Kulkarni. She was speaking during an anti-obesity awareness rally organised by Vibes Health and Beauty chain on Sunday on the occasion of ‘Anti-obesity Day’.

November 26, 2018 is celebrated as Anti-Obesity Day worldwide. To create awareness against obesity and as an endeavour, a march against obesity was organised at 7 am on Sunday. The march started from
Bhandarkar Road.

Regional Head of VIBES in Pune Sonia Kumar said that today, parents are the target audience of the awareness drive on obesity because they are the caretakers of the family.

“Many people misunderstood dieting and exercise. They think eating junk food, rice or extra usage of oil, butter and cheese will make them fat but it is not completely true. There are ways to burn calories without changing the food habits,” she said. She said that everyone faces the plight of increased weight these days.

“We’ve all been there. A pair of pants that suddenly feels too tight. A flight of stairs, once easy to climb, that seems like a monumental trek. Knees, hips and back hurting, and we’re tired all the time. Data released in October by the World Obesity Federation, a community of organisations dedicated to solving the problem of obesity, shows that the percentage of Indian adults living with obesity is set to jump to around 5 per cent by 2025 from 3.7 per cent in 2014.”
