Colleges in Pune not to reopen from January 11; students remain worried

Pune: Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) on Thursday in its circular made clear that colleges in Pune region affiliated to the varsity will not reopen on January 11. The circular stated that the dates of reopening of the affiliated colleges will be issued later.

Recently, the administration requested colleges to reopen with following of all COVID-19 norms in place as per University Grants Commission (UGC). It rescinded the circular asking colleges to wait for the new date.

“It is notified to all Heads of University Departments, Principal, Directors of colleges, institutions to take necessary steps to ensure appropriate preparations for reopening of University Departments and colleges, institutions, in advance, in accordance with the UGC Guidelines dated 6.11.2020, directions, guidelines issued by the State Government and local authorities from time to time. Date of the reopening of University Departments and colleges, institutions will be notified in due course of time as per the directives of the State Government”, the circular read.

In its earlier circular, varsity said that the colleges in Pune region (Pune, Nashik, Kolhapur) classes would resume in 800 affiliated colleges for, theory, practicals, industrial training of undergraduate, postgraduate and other doctoral programs.

The decision about reopening of colleges in Pune has now put students in state of worry. Many students who were excited to return campus after nine months are worried. One of the engineering student who wished to remain unnamed said, “We were happy that colleges will start from January 11 but now the new decision has come. We are worried about our curriculum. We can learn theory at home but we need practicals to perform at college. It’s been over nine months, many students like me are waiting for the gates to open.”
