COVID-19 Pune: Three brothers from Pimpri village succumb to the virus in a week

Pimpri: A shocking incident took place in Pimpri-Chinchwad, where in a week's time, three brothers who were undergoing treatment at the same hospital passed away. This is the first reported incident where all siblings belonging to a particular family died because of COVID-19.

The three siblings who died have been identified as Popatrao Kalapure (66), Dnyaneshwar alias Mauli Kalapure (63), and Diliprao Kalapure (61), all residents of Pimpri-Chinchwad.

The Kalapure family has been living together in Pimpri-Chinchwad for the last four years. Earlier, they used to live in the Kharalwadi area. On July 5, one of the children in their family got infected with the novel virus. As they were living in a joint family-like set up, all of the 18 members of the house tested for the virus.

The test results confirmed that everyone in the family had contracted the disease and then, all of them went to undergo treatment at a private hospital in Chinchwad.

Popatrao, Dnyaneshwar, and Diliprao were previously suffering from heart-related ailments. Out of the three, Dilip was the first one to be placed on a ventilator in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). After that, Popatrao and Dnyaneshwar also started showing symptoms having difficulty breathing and they were kept on a ventilator in the ICU.

Dilip died on July 10 while undergoing treatment. This is supposed to have frightened Popatrao and Dnyaneshwar even more. Popatrao died on July 15, just five days after his brother, and Dnyaneshwar died on July 17.

Popatrao Kalapure had retired from the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). He was well known as a labour leader. He was also the President of Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation's Kamgar Pathasanstha. Dnyaneshwar Kalapure was retired from his service at Hindustan Antibiotics Company. He was famous in Panchkrushi as a wrestler. The third brother, Diliprao, was also well-known as a wrestler.

Their demise has stunned the city where the tentacles of corona are spreading rapidly. The number of corona patients has now crossed the 12,000-mark.
