Pune, 16 June 2025: A sudden fire broke out in the Daund-Pune DEMU train on Monday morning, triggering panic among passengers and leading to a dramatic rescue of a passenger trapped inside a toilet. The incident occurred around 8 am near Yavat station in Pune district.
According to railway officials, the fire started in the toilet of the third coach from the engine due to a short circuit, but later investigations revealed that a passenger from Madhya Pradesh allegedly threw a lit beedi into the toilet dustbin, which contained paper and other waste. The resulting fire created heavy smoke, causing fear and chaos among passengers.
The fire was quickly brought under control with prompt action from railway staff and police. A passenger who was stuck in the toilet was rescued safely by breaking the door.
Thousands of commuters use this DEMU train daily to travel between Daund and Pune, and it is usually packed during morning hours. Fortunately, no casualties or major injuries were reported.
Railway police have detained a 55-year-old man in connection with the incident. Officials have urged passengers to refrain from smoking and disposing of lit items carelessly to avoid such life-threatening situations in the future.
