Dowry Death: Pune Engineer Dies by Suicide, In-Laws Booked for Harassment
Pune, 27 January 2026: A shocking case of alleged domestic harassment has come to light from Pune district, where a married woman engineer allegedly died by suicide after facing continuous abuse from her in-laws.
The incident took place at Soratpavadi near Uruli Kanchan, where Deepti Magar Chaudhary was found hanging at her residence.
According to police, Deepti ended her life while her three-year-old daughter was present in the house. Following a complaint by her family, police have registered a case against her husband Rohan Chaudhary, mother-in-law Sunita Chaudhary, father-in-law Karbhari Chaudhary, and brother-in-law Rohit Chaudhary.
Notably, Sunita Chaudhary is the sarpanch of the village, while Karbhari Chaudhary works as a teacher.
Deepti’s family has alleged that she was subjected to severe mental and physical harassment after marriage. They claimed that despite giving 50 tolas of gold during the wedding seven years ago, the harassment continued.
Her husband allegedly doubted her character and repeatedly insulted her, accusing her of not being good-looking and not knowing household work.
The complaint further states that Deepti’s family was forced to give ₹10 lakh in cash after marriage and an additional ₹25 lakh for purchasing a car. Even after these payments, the harassment did not stop.
Five years after marriage, Deepti gave birth to a daughter, which reportedly upset her in-laws. Later, when she became pregnant again, her family alleged that she was pressured to undergo a gender test. When it was revealed that the fetus was female, she was allegedly forced to terminate the pregnancy at five months.
Her family has stated that continuous abuse, dowry demands, and gender-based cruelty drove Deepti to take the extreme step. Police have confirmed that a case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
