Empire Estate residents will not pay property tax till demands are not met

PUNE: While agitating recently against Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), the residents and shop owners of Empire Estate, Chinchwad said they will not pay property tax unless and until their demands are met by the civic body.

It has been two years that the 1,600 flat owners and 200 shop owners of Empire Estate have been fighting for early completion of Empire Estate flyover. Along with it they have other demands which have time and again been ignored by the officials of PCMC.

The work order to construct 1.9-km flyover which passes through the middle of the Empire Estate, a housing society, was of April 6, 2011 and it was supposed to be completed on October 10, 2013. However the construction work has not been completed till now.

Santosh Pingle, Chairman, Federation of Empire Estate, said, “During the tenure of municipal commissioner Shrikar Pardeshi, the construction of ramps was proposed. During that time the work was going smoothly as per the plan. But then we started noticing that the width of the road is 45 metres and due to the construction of the 27-m wide flyover and two ramps, only 5 m wide road will be left on both sides of the flyover. This will reduce the width of the service road in Empire Estate, leaving less space for movement of residents’ vehicles, resulting in traffic congestion especially on holidays.”

He added, “In the recent protest held in Empire Estate, around 1,000 residents took part. We demanded that the PCMC authorities not construct the ramp. But neither the commissioner nor the authorities of PCMC entertained us. We also filed public interest litigation (PIL) before the Bombay High Court last month. Now that the PCMC authorities are not listening to our voices, all the residents along with shop owners will not pay property tax unless and until PCMC fulfills our demands.”
