Pune: In a respite to medical aspirants, the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) released the first round selection list for MBBS/BDS admissions on Friday.
The selection list was supposed to be uploaded on July 25, but it was postponed. In addition to the delay, there has been some confusion among students especially Outside Maharashtra Students (OMS) trying to seek admission in medicine about eligibility in taking admissions at government medical college.
DMER had recently filed a petition stating that students who have completed their Std X and XII from Maharashtra should be eligible to take admission in State government colleges. However, the petition was not approved by the Mumbai High Court (HC) citing that such changes in admission rules cannot be made suddenly as it will be injustice to students who had taken admission in Std XI in Maharashtra colleges.
“Many students come to Maharashtra to pursue Std XI and XII from here and then easily get admissions in medical colleges. Therefore, we had filed a petition to HC stating that students who pass Std X and XII from Maharashtra should be eligible to seek admission in government medical colleges. But HC rejected it. So far there has been no change in admission rules,” said Pravin Shingare, Director of DMER.
Irked by the HC decision on relaxing norms for OMS, parents of
State-domiciled students have moved the Supreme Court (SC) and a
final call is awaited.
Amidst all this confusion, there are a few students who are hassled as the state merit list released by DMER has names of state domiciled students against whom there is an asterisk mark indicating to verify their domicile certificates with college. One such case has come forward with a Pune-student who has been in the toppers list of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and hails from Maharashtra.
