PUNE: With a new calendar year approaching, people of all age groups are ready with their resolutions. While gymming and yoga are the hot favourite activities, the fitness market has received quite a boost.

Youngsters generally prefer gym activities to achieve the goal they have set for the New Year. “The maximum registration we have received till now is from the age group 18-30 years,” said Vishal Bandi, manager of Gold’s Gym. He also informed, “There is a hike of 70 per cent in gym registrations during the last month as New Year resolutions usually revolve around buffing or slimming.”

“We usually receive several tons of inquiries during the last 15 days of December, out of which only 50-60 last till the end of the year,” said Ashwini Gonghe from Fitness 365. It is not just the younger generation who prefer gyms, but people varying from all different age groups have started gymming, she added.

“There are several new types of diets and exercises introduced by fitness experts in the last few years. Ketogenic diet being one such hyped diet plan. With the information bombarded about Keto-diet on the social media, people have misunderstood the whole plan and are suffering due to lack of information,” said Bandi, when asked about new diet plans introduced in the fitness market.

The medium of exercise differs with age and gender as well. While male young adults prefer gyms to buff up, the females tend to lean towards Zumba and aerobics for slimming. Middle-aged women have started doing yoga and pranayam. “Packing and buffing are important as they are a sign of fitness and healthiness amongst guys.

“I usually see a large crowd in the start of the year but the crowd disappears and only the regulars remain,” said Romal Mistry, IT engineer who frequents the gym.

Maintaining health has concerned people of all age groups. While the youngsters prefer the new hi-tech activities, the people of older age group tend to go the traditional way. Efficient diet, morning walks and yoga is the regime followed by older people. ”I notice a large number of people frequenting the park during the start of the year. But the number gradually decreases later,” said
