Allegations: Celebrations under scrutiny

The controversy stems from viral social media clips showing Pandya celebrating the historic win with his girlfriend, Mahieka Sharma. According to the complaint filed by Advocate Wajid Khan, the cricketer’s conduct undermined the dignity of the tricolour.

The specific grievances include:

  • Draping: Draping the national flag over his shoulders while dancing and running across the field.

  • Podium incident: Lying down on the victory podium alongside Sharma while the flag remained wrapped around his body.

  • "Tied" flag: Allegations that the flag was tied to his back in a manner that was deemed disrespectful.

"A symbol of the entire nation"

Speaking to the media, Advocate Wajid Khan expressed his indignation over the viral footage, emphasizing that victory does not excuse a lack of formality toward national symbols.

You must have seen the T20 World Cup here. Hardik Pandya was dancing with his girlfriend in celebration of his victory. The national flag was tied to his back... According to Section 2 of the 1971 National Flag Act, we should respect the dignity of the national flag. However, Hardik Pandya was so lost in the celebration of his victory that he was lying with his girlfriend, wearing the national flag. I believe it is an insult to the national flag.

Advocate Wajid Khan

When I went to file the complaint, they told me the incident occurred there [Ahmedabad], not here. So I told them that the national flag is a symbol of the entire nation, and we can file a complaint with the Shivaji Nagar police. They have accepted my complaint and provided me with a copy. Let's see what happens next.

Public and legal reaction

On social media, fans have largely defended the all-rounder, characterizing the acts as "harmless, exuberant celebrations" after an intense and emotional tournament. However, a vocal minority agrees with Khan, suggesting that the the victory stage ought to have been approached with more formality.

Current status:

  • Police confirmation: A police officer at Shivaji Nagar confirmed that the complaint application has been submitted but noted that they have not yet elaborated on whether an official FIR will be registered.

  • Forensic review: Authorities are expected to examine the viral videos to determine if the 1971 Act was indeed violated.
