Pune: The Himalayan Club, an international organisation founded in 1928, is celebrating 90 years, while its Pune section is completing 12 years. Its annual day will be celebrated on April 1 at the National Film Archives of India Auditorium from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm.
This voluntary body was handed over to Indians after Independence. Thus, it is the oldest organisation in India related to Himalayas, with the motto to encourage Himalayan travel, treks, explorations, climbs and to extend knowledge of Himalayas through science, art, literature and sport.
Raghunath Godbole, Secretary for Pune section of The Himalayan Club, said, “The annual day of Pune will comprise talks by various people, who have years of experience of expedition and mountaineering in India. The entry is free for all. The main purpose of this annual day is to encourage more mountaineers from Pune district. From all over Maharashtra, there have been more than 26 expeditions carried out by summiters of Pune, which is more in number than any other city of Maharashtra.”
He added, "We are focusing more on eco-friendly expeditions and studying the biodiversity of these places."
