The government has asked local bodies to plan their available water resources until August 31, 2027. If required, the 10% reduction can be increased to ensure that available water lasts through the year.

The directive comes against the backdrop of concerns linked to the El Niño effect and the need for long-term water management.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has said it has not yet received the government order regarding the 10% water cut. The civic administration said it would take an appropriate decision once the official directive is received.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Prajeet Nair said, “The municipal administration has not received the state government’s order regarding a 10% water cut from October 16. An appropriate decision will be taken after the order is received.”

Pune had introduced alternate-day water supply in June as a conservation measure. The decision was later withdrawn after rainfall improved and water availability increased.

With the state now directing local bodies to reduce consumption, Pune may once again face the possibility of restrictions on water supply. The civic administration will have to assess the situation and decide on further measures after receiving the government’s order.
