Pune, 19 January 2026: In a tragic incident of alleged medical negligence a 30-year-old man died shortly after being discharged from Aundh District Hospital despite complaining of chest pain.
The deceased has been identified as Sumit Shrikant Gadre (Sonawane), a resident of Mamtanagar in Old Sangvi. According to his family, Sumit was taken to the district hospital around 3:40 am on Sunday after he complained of severe chest pain.
Doctors on emergency duty conducted an ECG test, which is commonly used to detect heart-related issues.
However, the doctors reportedly ruled out a heart attack, diagnosed the problem as gastric discomfort, and administered pain-relief injections along with medicines for nausea and dizziness. After his pain reportedly subsided, Sumit was sent home.
Within 15 minutes of returning home, Sumit collapsed after going to the bathroom. His family rushed him back to the same hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Shocked by the sudden death, the family accused the doctors of negligence and initially refused to take custody of the body. They demanded that a case of culpable homicide be registered against the doctors involved.
After Sangvi police assured them that appropriate action would be taken based on an expert medical report from Sassoon General Hospital, the family accepted the body.
Health activist Sharad Shetty said that Aundh District Hospital lacks full-time cardiac specialists and adequate heart care facilities. He stated that if the patient had been referred to a hospital with proper cardiac treatment facilities or to Sassoon Hospital, his life could have been saved.
Sumit’s brother, Vivek Gadre, also alleged that timely and proper treatment could have prevented the death. He said Sumit worked as a peon at a college and accused the doctors of carelessness leading to his brother’s death.
Attempts to contact District Civil Surgeon Dr Nagnath Yempalle for the hospital’s response were unsuccessful.
