More than 7,000 EVMs with VVPAT to be used for Pune

PUNE: According to district administration, 7,666 EVMs with VVPAT will be used during the 2019 Lok Sabha and assembly elections in Pune. This information was given during the launch of a special Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) awareness vehicle by District Collector Naval Kishore Ram on Saturday. 

VVPAT vehicle will be used for 45-day campaign to educate common citizens to dispel their apprehensions and mistrust about VVPAT enabled Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha polls. A team of five specially trained officials will cover all urban and rural areas of Pune District. 

During the launch, the district administration conducted the demonstration on the complete functioning of VVPAT for the media, representatives of several political parties were also present at collector’s office. When a voter exercises his /her vote on EVM, VVPAT displays a slip bearing serial number, name and symbol of the candidate voted for seven seconds and then the slip drops in the sealed box. Several political party representatives as well as the volunteers from the audience took part in this demonstration. 

DC Naval Kishor Ram highlighted the achievements of district election office of registering new two lakh voters in merely two months and said that there is significant rise in number of women voters. He said that due to three types of duplication, a lot of challenges had to be faced during the preparation of voters’ list. He added that over four lakh urban voters have voter ID cards without photographs. The collector also said that the final voters’ list will be declassified on January 11 and the names of the eligible voters can still be added after this date by following the laid down procedure. 

During election, 20 per cent machines will be kept on reserve mode, said Deputy Election Officer Monica Singh. She added that if any of these machines develop a glitch, then only, reserved machines will be used.
