

Pune, 8th October 2026: Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar has announced that veteran actor Nana Patekar will be accorded a state funeral in recognition of his contribution to Marathi theatre and Marathi and Hindi cinema.
Patekar, 75, passed away in Goa early Thursday. He is suspected to have suffered a heart attack. His body was taken to Goa Medical College and Hospital near Panaji for a postmortem. His last rites will be performed today evening at Donaje village near Pune.
Shelar said the Devendra Fadnavis-led Maharashtra government took the decision considering Nana’s significant and unparalleled contribution to theatre and cinema. Known for his versatility, intense performances and powerful screen presence, he remained a prominent figure in both Marathi and Hindi entertainment.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled Nana’s death and remembered him for his distinctive acting style and memorable performances.
Modi said Nana brought intensity, individuality and a strong presence to his roles. He added that the actor’s versatility and creativity gave audiences characters that would be remembered for generations.
The Prime Minister also recalled Nana’s frank and forthright personality, saying he never hesitated to express his views. Modi said Patekar’s contribution to Hindi and Marathi cinema was immense and that his death had left a deep void.
He expressed condolences to family, friends and countless admirers, and paid tribute to the actor with the words, “Om Shanti.”
