According to reports, the young woman, lit a colourful sparkling firecracker using an incense stick. Before she could move away, the cracker unexpectedly burst, sending sparks, gunpowder, and flames toward her face. The firecracker then shot into the air, but by that time, her face and eyes had already been badly burnt.

She was immediately taken to Dudhbhate Eye Hospital in Manik Baug, Sinhagad Road, where ophthalmologist Dr. Anil Dudhbhate examined her. The doctor confirmed burns to her eyelids and inner eye area, as well as significant injury to both pupils. Tests such as eye sonography and vision assessment were conducted, and she was started on urgent medication to prevent further damage.

Dr. Dudhbhate said the patient’s pupils were burned and her vision had weakened, but surgery might not be necessary if she responds well to treatment. He added that recovery could take up to two weeks, during which she would need regular check ups and timely use of prescribed eye drops.

He urged the public to exercise caution while celebrating with firecrackers. “Firecracker injuries are entirely preventable,” he said. “Always buy good-quality fireworks, maintain a safe distance while lighting them, and never apply home remedies if an accident occurs. Rinse the face with clean water and seek immediate medical attention from an eye specialist.”
