New top cop will focus on basic policing in city

Pune: Commissioner Of Police K Venkatesham, who took charge last week, on Monday said that in the coming days, the police will be visible on the streets, which will help in preventing several crimes.

Venkatesham announced this during an interaction with mediapersons at the commissioner’s office in Camp. “My focus will be on basic policing to help the citizens in solving their grievances. I will also keep a close watch on how investigations are being done by officers,” he said. 

Senior police officers including Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Pradip Deshpande, DCP (Crime) Shirish Sardeshpande, DCP (Cyber and EOW) Jyotipriya Singh, DCP Bachchan Singh, ACP (Crime 2) Bhanupratap Barge were present on the occasion. Venkatesham appealed to people who buy the best vehicles to see they have good locking system to prevent vehicle thefts.

The new commissioner said he will be active on social media like his predecessor Rashmi Shukla and would operate Twitter and have a dedicated WhatsApp number 8975283100 where citizens can send their complaints and grievances. 

Venkatesham has replaced Shukla who has been transferred as Additional Director General  (ADG) of  Highway Safety Patrol (HSP). 

Venkatesham began his career as Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Gondia district which was his first posting on completion of his IPS training. He has worked as Deputy Commissioner of Police in different zones in Mumbai and known for his crackdown on gangsters. He also worked with Mumbai Special Branch II as in-charge of Foreigners Registration and Immigration at international airport.
