Pune, 3rd January 2026: To ensure road safety amid heavy traffic during New Year celebrations, the Pune Traffic Police carried out a special ‘Drink and Drive’ enforcement drive across the city. Between midnight of December 31 and the early hours of January 1, action was taken against 208 motorists found driving under the influence of alcohol.

As part of the operation, the traffic department set up 40 checkpoints in different parts of the city on December 31 night. During this period, 2,128 vehicles were checked. Apart from drunk driving cases, police also seized 51 vehicles for other traffic violations. A total fine of ₹70,400 was collected during the drive.

The police said that similar night inspections were conducted daily between December 24 and 31 across all 30 traffic divisions in the city during the Christmas and New Year period. In these checks alone, 486 drivers were booked under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act for driving after consuming alcohol.

Sharing year-long data, the traffic police revealed that in 2025, cases were filed against 6,765 drunk drivers, and all were presented before the court. Emphasising road safety, Himmat Jadhav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said drunk driving is a serious offence that significantly increases the risk of accidents.

He appealed to citizens to strictly follow traffic rules and avoid endangering their own lives and those of others.
