Pune: The non-teaching staff working on daily wages at Sir Parshurambhau (SP) College staged an impromptu protest against the college in front of the college on Friday.
Around 60-70 daily wage workers including workers who have been working on daily wages for over 15 years at Sir Parshurambhau College are demanding to bring them on the college’s pay roll.
“All of us work on daily wages. We hardly earn Rs 6,000-7,000 per month. Many among us have been working here for last 15 years, but our job is not permanent. The college has been promising to make us permanent, but no decisive action has been taken so far to make it effective,” said Lab Assistant of Geography Department, Amol Dhumal.
“Our salary is not secured monthly. There are many among us who are under debt or are the only bread earner in their family. Children’s school fees and dealing with daily expenses has become impossible. Our only demand is to make us permanent, so that we get a monthly salary,” said Chemistry Lab Attendant, Ashok Koli.
Founder of Bhumata Brigade and social activist Trupti Desai has extended her support to these workers. She will be part of the protest on Saturday.
“It is strange that the college had ample of amount to splurge on their 100 years’ anniversary, but neglected the plight of these marginalised section. These workers are on daily basis payment and lose their payments on holidays like Saturdays and Sundays. Our only demand is to make them permanent and bring them on the payroll. We are completely in support of these workers and will fight till they get justice,” said Desai who will join these workers’ protest on Saturday.
