Pune: In view of the strengthening and deepening of cross-equatorial flow and enhanced cloudiness and rainfall, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the southwest monsoon has advanced into the south Andaman Sea, some parts of south Bay of Bengal and Nicobar islands on Friday.
IMD also said that conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some parts of south Arabian Sea, Comorin-Maldives areas, some more parts of south Bay of Bengal, north Andaman Sea and Andaman islands till May 27.
Previously, IMD had issued a statement mentioning that the monsoon will reach Kerala by May 29. The prediction model has an error of four days.
From Thursday morning to Friday morning, IMD observed fairly widespread rainfall over Lakshadweep, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karnataka. Minicoy in Lakshadweep reported 76.7 mm rainfall and Vellanikkara in Kerala reported 80.3 mm rainfall till Friday.
IMD also noted that the conditions are very likely to become favourable for further advance into parts of the south Arabian sea, Lakshadweep, Comorin area, south Kerala and south Tamil Nadu till May 27.
Also conditions are very likely to become favourable for further advance into some more parts of Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of the Andaman Sea and some parts of east-central Bay of Bengal till May 27.
However, northern parts of the country are still experiencing the blazing heat. The highest maximum temperature recorded over the plains was 47.5 degrees Celsius at Khajuraho in east Madhya Pradesh.
In the coming week, Maharashtra too will witness heatwave-like condition which is prevalent in parts of Vidarbha. Pune city may experience cloudy weather and light drizzles on May 26, said IMD.
