Now, you can use uninterrupted internet on trains

PUNE: After equipping the stations with Wi-Fi, the Railways has now provided the facility of Wi-Fi to passengers within the trains, so that they can enjoy videos and movies on their laptops or mobile phones without any interruption. For this, the Railways will get their own spectrum.

The Railways has equipped 1,603 stations with the Wi-Fi facility, while work on 4,882 stations was on. But after receiving the Wi-Fi facility at the station, the passengers avail the facility for some distance in the premises, but not on the train. During the journey, passengers either depend on their mobile data or dongle and face inconvenience of the Internet speed.

“The Pune railway division had started the Wi-Fi facility a year back in Pune-Secunderabad Shatabdi Express but was unsuccessful. Now Railways is trying to take its own spectrum. Once the spectrum is received from the government, the Railways will establish a mobile tower at its place along the tracks and connect with the pre-existing optical fibre cable (OFC),” said a Railway officer.

This will give passengers an Internet facility without interruption. At present, the spectrum and set-ups of private companies are used for Wi-Fi at stations,” he added.

“With the availability of strong Wi-Fi waves between the stations and the track, Internet surfing will be easy within the train and reduce the buffering problem. These facilities will be a boon for the busy executives and they will be able to handle their required tasks during the journey. Not only this, but the facility will also help in ensuring the safety of passengers and curbing train accidents. Real-time monitoring from the control room of live footage of CCTV cameras inside the coach will be easy to control and hold unwanted elements,” said the officer.
