PCMC told to impose 10 per cent water cut

PIMPRI: The Irrigation Department has asked the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to introduce 10 per cent water cut in view of the shortage of water in the Pavana dam.

The Pavana dam has 7.58 Thousand Million Cubic (TMC) ft water which is 89 per cent of its total storage capacity.

The present water is enough to meet the water requirement of the city only till June 29 next year.

Normally, the dam starts receiving water in July every year. Therefore, water stock in the dam is maintained so as to meet the water requirement till July 15.

Pavana dam had 100 per cent water stock (8.51 TMC ft) on September 18 this year. Pimpri Chinchwad per month needs 0.5 TMC ft water. The city receives 480 million litres per day (MLD) of water. If the daily supply is reduced to 440 MLD, the water in the dam will be adequate to meet the requirement till July 15.

Pandurang Shelar, Executive Engineer of the Irrigation Department, said the Canal Advisory Committee has decided to reduce the water supply from 480 MLD to 440 MLD and accordingly the PCMC has been asked to take the decision on water cut. “Pimpri Chinchwad will face water shortage during the summer if water cut is not introduced now,” he said.

Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner Shravan Hardikar said the water situation will be reviewed and decision on water cut will be taken after the Diwali festival.
