Pune: Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) solid waste management department has decided to conduct a survey in the newly merged 11 fringe villages to ascertain how much garbage is generated there.
With the merger of these fringe villages, including Uruli Devachi and Phursungi, where the dumping ground is located, a population of over five lakh will be added to the existing Pune’s population of over 35 lakh.
The PMC has already been facing a lot of problems regarding disposal of over 1,600 metric tonnes of garbage generated daily and it will now have to provide amenities such as a garbage disposal plant to the newly merged villages as well.
Solid waste management department head Suresh Jagtap said around 80-sq km area has been added to PMC limits. Most of the area in these villages has already been developed. “We will initiate the survey as soon as possible. Once we get to know what is the current situation regarding garbage generation and disposal in these villages, we will be able to set up new plants,” he said.
He said that on an average, one person generates around 450 gm of garbage daily. Garbage generation is around 650 gm per head in upmarket areas while it is 225 gm per head in slums. “A survey report will be submitted to the State government within the next two months. Later, the PMC will chalk out a plan for disposing of garbage generated in these villages,” he said.
