PMC Launches Special Cleanup Drive as Pune Generates 750 Tons of Extra Waste During Diwali

Pune, 25 October 2025: Pune witnessed a sharp rise in waste generation during the five days of Diwali, with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) collecting nearly 750 tons of additional garbage between Narak Chaturdashi and Bhaubij (October 20 to 24).
On average, the city produced 150 tons more waste daily, mainly from firecracker debris, gift wrapping paper, and discarded household items.
On day to day basis, Pune generates around 2,500 to 2,600 tons of waste each day. However, during Diwali, the total increased to nearly 2,900 tons. According to officials from the PMC’s Solid Waste Department, dry waste made up a major part of this extra load.
To maintain cleanliness during the festive rush, the PMC implemented special arrangements to ensure daily collection from all areas of the city. Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Kadam said the civic body took timely measures so that garbage did not pile up on streets during the celebrations, keeping the city clean and problem-free.
Ahead of the festival, many residents disposed of old furniture, mattresses, and other bulky items, often leaving them near riverbeds or roadsides. In response, the PMC organized a citywide drive to collect such large waste items directly from citizens’ homes.
On Lakshmi Puja day, when garbage volumes were highest, PMC workers were deployed early in the morning for extra rounds of collection. Each zone was assigned specific responsibilities, and the Municipal Commissioner conducted on-ground inspections to monitor the cleanup. Kadam said that special attention was given this year to maintain hygiene and ensure Pune remained clean throughout Diwali.
