Pune, 25 November 2025: Even after repeated claims of making the city pothole-free, residents continue to report bad road conditions across several areas. In response, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has now introduced stricter monitoring and made the use of GIS technology mandatory for all road repair and resurfacing work.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Omprakash Divte has instructed the road department to enter road-wise and width-wise details of every pothole repair and resurfacing activity into the GIS system. The aim is to create a transparent record of exactly where repairs have been carried out.
Although the work is being promoted under Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishor Ram’s “pothole-free Pune” initiative, complaints have increased that some repairs only exist on paper. To address these concerns, PMC has made daily updates on the GIS platform compulsory. This includes details such as the exact stretch repaired and the total square metres covered.
There have also been reports that the road department was not using the GIS platform effectively. In response, Divte has directed the immediate deployment of GIS experts to ensure accurate data entry and reliable monitoring. He noted that incorrect or missing records create doubts about the actual work done.
Responsibility for these updates has been assigned to sub-engineers, but senior officials, including superintendent engineers, executive engineers and the chief engineer, will also be required to conduct field inspections.
Each completed job must have a GIS layer created and preserved for future verification. Divte has warned that carelessness or lapses in this process will not be tolerated.
