To make these facilities easier to access, PMC has introduced a QR code system that provides details of crematoriums equipped with eco-friendly options.

These QR codes will be displayed at death pass centers in 54 hospitals and 19 maternity homes, enabling families to quickly find nearby green cremation facilities.

Currently, PMC operates 75 crematoriums in Pune, of which 21 are equipped with electric or gas-based systems. The city records around 3,500 to 4,000 cremations every month, and nearly 51% of these are already conducted using eco-friendly methods.

Civic officials highlighted that traditional wood-based cremations release high levels of carbon emissions, smoke, and particulate matter, which contribute to respiratory and heart-related illnesses.

In contrast, electric and gas cremation methods significantly reduce emissions, lower the carbon footprint, and complete the process within two to three hours.
