Pune, 5th July 2025: In response to growing safety concerns following recent bridge collapses, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved a tender worth ₹1.18 crore for conducting structural audits of bridges across the city. The Standing Committee has cleared the proposal submitted by Structonic Consulting Engineers, who offered the lowest bid for the project.
The move comes after a tragic incident on June 15 in Kundmala, Maval, where a steel bridge over the Indrayani River collapsed, resulting in the death of four individuals and injuries to 32 others. This incident renewed focus on the safety of bridges in Pune.
Following a similar collapse of a bridge over the Savitri River in the past, the PMC had begun structural audits of key city bridges and had also initiated repair works based on audit findings. However, the pace of the work has been notably slow.
There are a total of 86 large and 170 small bridges in Pune. So far, only 38 of them have undergone a structural audit. Of these, repair work has been completed on just 11 bridges. With the majority of bridges still awaiting inspection, the PMC decided to float tenders to complete the remaining audits.
The approved contractor, Structonic Consulting Engineers, will now carry out the audit work. The ₹1.18 crore tender was chosen as it was the lowest among the bids received. The structural audits will focus on bridges over rivers, flyovers, railway overbridges, and culverts, assessing their safety and structural stability.
Previously, PMC had conducted audits on 18 bridges in 2013-14, 12 more in 2018-19, and another 38 aged over 20 years in 2021. Currently, Pune has 61 major bridges, including 32 over rivers, 20 flyovers, and 9 railway overbridges. However, only 38 of these have been audited so far. The newly approved audit aims to cover the remaining structures to ensure public safety.
