Pune, 6th December 2025: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has doubled the salary of specialist doctors at Kamala Nehru Hospital in a major move to strengthen medical services. The monthly pay has been increased from ₹1.25 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh following repeated complaints that low salaries were discouraging doctors from joining.
Kamala Nehru Hospital is the PMC’s largest facility, but despite its large building and infrastructure, several treatments could not be offered due to a shortage of specialist doctors. Many patients were being referred to Sassoon Hospital for advanced care.
After inspecting the hospital recently, Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishor Ram noted that patients were not receiving adequate treatment and that many doctors had left due to low pay. To address this, PMC has instructed the administration to invite applications immediately and conduct interviews to recruit 25 specialist doctors.
Earlier, PMC had approved ₹13 crore for upgrading the hospital. In the Standing Committee meeting held on Friday, an additional ₹42 crore was sanctioned for further repairs and improvements.
Commissioner Naval Kishor Ram said the patients who visit PMC hospitals are often poor and need affordable, quality healthcare. He added that major improvements are being made at Kamala Nehru Hospital and that the recruitment of 25 specialists will be taken up on priority.
