Pune, 22 January 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation’s efforts to strengthen financial and social security for contract workers have provided crucial relief to a bereaved family. Following the accidental death of contract worker Nivant Avsare, PMC and the concerned contractor jointly extended financial assistance of ₹10 lakh to his family.
The sudden loss of the family’s sole breadwinner had left the household in distress. The financial support is expected to help the family stabilise their livelihood and rebuild their lives after the tragedy.
PMC employs nearly 10,000 contract workers, many of whom earn modest wages and lack access to adequate healthcare or financial protection. In cases of accidents or death, families often face severe hardship. Taking note of repeated complaints, the municipal administration had directed that every contract worker be covered under a ₹10 lakh accidental insurance policy.
In line with this policy, the contractor had insured Nivant Avsare. After his accidental death, the insurance amount was formally handed over to his wife, Sakshi Avsare, and his father, Dashrath Avsare, by senior municipal officials.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Labour Officer said the insurance policy was introduced last year to ensure that families of contract workers are not left helpless in the event of an untimely death. The support, he added, is a step towards providing dignity and security to contract workers and their families.
