Pune: As a part of waste management, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) will work with respective gram panchayats in Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR) for handling the issue of management of waste generated in PMR.

PMRDA Chief Kiran Gitte on Tuesday said that as a part of ‘Ways to energy initiative’, the collected waste will be converted into energy.

“There is a plant in Hadapsar which can manage up to 2,000 metric tonnes of garbage. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) generates about 1,200 tonnes of garbage on a daily basis, and garbage from 25 villages in PMR will be brought together for processing,” added Gitte.

Gitte said PMRDA will provide capital investment to gram panchayats and the gram panchayats will have to provide manpower for garbage collection. “We can provide them with infrastructure, along with vehicles and garbage bins, but the manpower for running the garbage collection has to be done by the gram panchayats,” added Gitte.
