Pune, 16 June 2025: A recent probe by the Primary Education Department has uncovered that 13 schools across Pune district, covering both urban and rural areas, are functioning without any official government recognition. Additionally, nine schools have only received a letter of intent but not the final approval required to operate legally. In a further alarming revelation, 24 government-recognised schools are not running at their sanctioned locations.
Sharing these findings through an official press release, Sanjay Naikade, Primary Education Officer of the Zilla Parishad, cautioned parents against enrolling their children in such unauthorised institutions. He noted that the rising demand for English-medium education has led many unsuspecting parents to admit their wards to schools that have no legal sanction.
Reports compiled by administrative and group education officers from Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations, as well as rural blocks, show the spread of these irregularities. Area-wise, the list includes one unauthorised school each in Daund, Haveli, Purandar, and Maval; seven in Mulshi; three in Khed; one in Pimpri-Chinchwad; and nine within the Pune Municipal Corporation limits.
Despite lacking approval, some schools are aggressively advertising admissions, misleading parents. The Education Department has instructed officers to display clear notices outside such schools declaring their unauthorised status and to take prompt steps to close them down. Naikade warned that if these institutions continue to operate, accountability will rest with the concerned administrative and education officers.
