Pune: 18 month old boy, playing outside house, dies after falling into well in Shirur

Pune: A one and a half-year-old boy - identified as Omkar Balasaheb Jambhalkar - died after falling into a well at Shirasgaon Kata village in Shirur tehsil while playing outside his house on Monday (August 31) evening.

Somnath Jambhalkar has lodged a complaint in this regard. According to the police, Omkar suddenly disappeared from near his house while playing on Monday (August 31) evening. After some time, when the family realized that Omkar was missing, they started searching around.

A trap for stray leopards was set up at a distance of about a thousand feet from the house. Many began searching for Omkar, fearing that he might have been taken by a leopard. Forest Department staff Gandhale, with the help of locals, conducted a search in the sugarcane field. However, Omkar was not found.

The second possibility was that he could have fallen into the well nearby and thus a search operation needed to be conducted in that area. But the well had about 45 feet of water. Due to the night hours load shedding of power in the area, it was difficult to pump out water from the well. However, with the help of Rajendra Pawar, Pune District Superintendent of MSEDCL, Yedke, an engineer from Kedgaon Sub Division of MSEDCL and Mulani, a staff member of MSEDCL, the electricity supply was restored in the night and water from the well was pumped out. Omkar's body was found in the early hours of Tuesday. Meanwhile, the police rushed to the spot and took the body into custody. After autopsy at Shikrapur, the body was handed over to the relatives.

Sub Divisional Officer Santosh Kumar Deshmukh, Disaster Management Officer Vitthal Banote, Pune District Disaster Management Member Pramod Balkwade along with Padmakar Ghanwat of Local Crime Investigation Department, Police Patil Bhausaheb Gaikwad, Forest Department Officer, Talathi Tilekar, Former Sarpanch Satish Chavan, Nandkumar Kadam, Ganesh Mane and Officers Shravan Gupche and Kiran Duke from Mandvagan police station extended their assistance in the operation.

A case has been registered at Shirur police station in this regard. Further investigations are being carried out by Shravan Gupche, an officer from Mandavgan police station.
