Pune, 13th August 2026: Residents of Pune’s newly merged villages are likely to get relief from water supply problems as the Pune Municipal Corporation is set to receive about 2.5 hectares of land from the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) at Khadakwasla for a proposed 200 MLD water treatment plant.
The land proposal was discussed during the Small River Regeneration Framework Conference held at CWPRS on Wednesday. Pune Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram raised the proposal for making the land available for the project. CWPRS Director Selva Balan responded positively to the proposal.
The proposed plant is expected to become an important part of city’s long-term water planning, particularly as population growth and construction activity continue to expand in the newly merged areas.

Sanasnagar
Kirkatwadi
Nanded
Dhayari
Narhe
Bhilarewadi
Mangadewadi
Nimbalkarwadi
Kolewadi
Jambhulwadi
Kondhwe-Dhawade, Kirkatwadi, Uttamnagar and Shivane will also benefit from the wider water supply system. The Centre has approved 25 per cent funding for the PMC’s ₹890-crore scheme through the Urban Relief Fund.
The newly merged areas have seen rapid residential development and construction in recent years. The PMC expects the 200 MLD plant to help meet the rising demand and provide a more reliable supply of treated water.
Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said, “Construction activity is increasing rapidly in the newly merged villages. Against this backdrop, commissioning the 200 MLD water treatment plant will help provide clean and regular water supply to these areas. The PMC and CWPRS will now coordinate on land transfer and technical requirements so that the next steps can be completed quickly.”
The proposed plant is also expected to strengthen Pune’s long-term water management as the city continues to expand. Availability of the CWPRS land at Khadakwasla could help the PMC move ahead with the project and improve water infrastructure in the rapidly developing eastern and southern parts of the city.
The PMC and CWPRS will now have to complete the formal land-transfer process and address technical requirements before construction work can begin.
