Pune, 10 November 2025: A large-scale expansion of Pune Airport is planned, requiring more than 300 acres of land. The Maharashtra government has recently forwarded the proposal to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation, marking a key step in the airport’s long-pending growth plan.
The planned land area includes both government-owned and privately-owned plots. Officials said the proposal will also be sent to the Defence Ministry soon, as its approval is necessary before land acquisition can begin. Once approved, the process of acquiring land is expected to move faster.
The project aims to extend the existing runway, expand parking bays, and create an exclusive terminal for private aircraft and helicopters. A dedicated facility for aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) is also proposed. This would allow servicing and repairs of commercial aircraft at Pune itself, reducing dependence on other cities.
According to Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol, the airport needs over 300 acres for expansion. He said the proposal has now gone to the Centre and the plan includes a general aviation terminal and an MRO facility.
Private helicopter and charter flight traffic from Pune has been steadily rising. A separate terminal is expected to make their operations smoother and faster. With such a facility, the number of private aircraft movements is likely to grow in future. The terminal will also offer lounges, meeting rooms and business-support services for high-profile travellers.
Officials said the runway expansion will allow larger aircraft to operate from Pune, benefiting passengers with more flight options.
