Pune, 26 March 2026: A fact-finding committee has alleged that the detention of four minor schoolgirls by the police in Budhwar Peth on February 11 was illegal and violated child rights. The panel has demanded an immediate, independent, and impartial investigation into the incident.
The committee, formed to examine the police action, includes Meena Seshu from the National Network of Sex Workers, Manisha Gupte from MASUM, and Sayali Atre from Let’s Play Trust. Tejaswi Sevekari from Saheli Sangh was also present during the press briefing.
According to the committee, the girls, despite being born in Budhwar Peth, were not involved in sex work and had clearly stated they were not in danger. However, the police allegedly treated them harshly and failed to ensure that the rights of children and their families were protected during what was claimed to be an anti-trafficking operation.
“The girls told us they were never at risk, yet they were handled in a harsh and insensitive manner. Authorities failed to follow basic child protection norms, and no effort was made to safeguard their rights or dignity during the operation,” said Meena Seshu.
The panel further pointed out procedural violations, stating that the girls were not consulted during the process. It also alleged that police officers conducted questioning in uniform and detained the minors late at night, both of which go against established child protection guidelines.
“Minors should not be questioned by uniformed personnel, nor should they be kept in custody past midnight. Such actions can cause severe psychological distress and directly violate child rights,” said Sayali Atre.
The committee also raised concerns about the long-term impact of the incident on the girls’ lives. All four were attending school, and the police action could disrupt their education while also exposing them to social stigma and reputational harm.
“Without understanding the families’ actual circumstances, the action was carried out in the name of protection. This has placed unnecessary mental stress on the girls and could negatively affect their education and future,” said Manisha Gupte.
In a particularly striking detail, the committee revealed that one of the detained girls is a 14-year-old national-level taekwondo player who has won multiple medals. She had previously been honoured by the Pune Police for her achievements.
Questioning the logic behind the action, the panel said it was deeply concerning that a recognized young athlete was treated as part of such an operation without proper verification.
